Try out a Great New Search Tool

garyduke.com : home base for my web shenanigans
In order to encourage folks to write for the First Church Environmental blog, I’ve created a little screencast guiding you through your first entry.
It lasts about 5 minutes and requires QuickTime (which you almost certainly will already have on your computer).
Speakers should be on for best results. It’s amateurish, of course, but maybe it’ll help some.

There’s Google … Then There’s All the Rest
Click the link above to check out all the sites I talked about in my presentation and some I didn’t. Be sure to click on the blue down triangles to see all the links. If you’d like to view the Powerpoint I used (not all slides were covered) that is available here. Or you can view the same thing as a PDF.
Late Discoveries: I’ve added a few additional things here that didn’t make it into the main list.
I remembered the name of the site that’s great for finding people. It’s Zoominfo.com. Type in a name and you’ll find all the people with that name AND an institution affiliation. Even if it’s not up to date, it’s just enough of a hint that you can figure out it’s the person you’re looking for. Of course, start by searching for your self. If you’re there register and update the info. If you’re not there, sign up. And encourage your friends too as well.
A site I like very much is Factbites. It is a cross between an encyclopedia and a search engine. The results are meaningful sentences which don’t require further clicking and provide a quick overview of the subject.
Noodlequest aids in the discovery of particular kinds of search engines for particular purposes and works especially well for students of all ages.
Google features is a good one page display of useful functions.
And, of course, Jux2 is the metasearch tool that shows unique hits in Google, MSN, and Yahoo.
I also mentioned how much I enjoy the Flickr photo site. (You’ll need a Yahoo log-in to sign up). It does a bit of a learning curve but, in my judgment, it’s well worth it.
Enjoyed having you all !
[Great Big Colorful Picture] Login
This is the login for the BaseCamp project I’m experimenting with.
Here are the Powerpoints from the two weeks of teaching I did at the First Methodist Church (Jan 7 and 28, 2007): Week 1 - Week 2. If you don’t have Powerpoint on your machine you’ll need to download a free viewer from the Microsoft site.
I mentioned earlier that I have not really had a good take on what to recommend that people read. Heres the best Ive been able to do:
1. Secondary sources: encyclopedias, articles, web pages
2. The Divine Milieu. Short and Theological rather than Scientific.
3. The Phenomenon of Man. Somewhat difficult. Have a dictionary close by.
4. The Future of Man. Speculative but interesting (if you can get through it.)
eBay View About Me for garyduke
This is the quick page I whipped up for the benefit of my emeritus students.
They say this is a fantastic book about how badly we do the happiness thing. Sound depressing? From all reports, it’s a hoot!
My Top LinksĀ — Disovered Through Google Reader
This is the link created by items I mark in Google Reader — which by the way, is light years away from where it was a few months. I now love it. I’m still thinking about how best to link it my blog. In any case, if this sort of thing appeals to you … all speed ahead.
What are you optimistic about? Very smart people answer that question…
Google Co-op - Custom Search Engine
This one has only a very few high quality directories … which the results emphasize … but the entire web is still searched.
